Group of Environmental and Bioprocess Engineering

Department of Biotechnology - University of Verona - Italy 

The Group of Environmental and Bioprocess Engineering (www.labicab.it) is a referenced international leader in the fields of innovative wastewater treatment and management and biowaste and sludge management, with an average income for research projects (both public and private) of 500 k€ per year in the last five years. The group has a consolidated experience in the management and implementation of EU projects and a stable network with water and waste public and private companies and water authorities. This are established also via a master school of wastewater treatment and management, based in Treviso, which is coordinated by the University of Verona and includes 6 universities, 6 public water utilities and 1 water authority.

CURRENT MAIN RESEARCH TOPICS

  • Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and/or biodegradable waste
  • Enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus via-nitrite removal from anaerobic supernatants
  • Occurrence, removal and fate of non-conventional and emerging contaminants in WWTPs
  • Recovery of biopolymers from sewage sludge and organic waste
  • Anaerobic winery wastewater and/or waste treatment

IMPACT AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

Since 2004, the Master of Engineering (post-lauream) entitled “Chemical Engineering for Wastewater Treatment and Renewable Resources”. From 2009 on, this Master is co-organized by 6 Italian universities (University of Verona, Padua, Venice “Ca' Foscari”, Udine, Trieste and the Marche Polytechnic University), 6 public water utilities (AGSM, ATS, CADF, CAFC, Acque Vicentine, CST - gruppo ACEGAS-APS-), 1 water authority (AATO Veneto Orientale) and 1 interuniversity consortium (INCA) (further information on www.masteringegneriaambienteenergia.com).

Currently the group is collaborating with several water and waste utilities and industries within pilot-scale and demonstration R&D projects. Major R&D projects are ongoing with:

  • ATS (Alto Trevigiano Servizi) - Demonstration Project "Short-Cut Nutrients Removal from Anaerobic Supernatants";
  • SIDRA SpA – Monitoring and optimal design for the main full scale WWTP of Catania
  • SIMEM SpA – Optimization of anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewater
  • SISP (Servizi Idrici Sinistra Piave) - Feasibility Study "Optimization of Small Wastewater Treatment Plants",
  • AGSM/AcqueVeronesi/AMIA - Joint Project Pilot-scale study "Anaerobic co-digestion of biodegradable waste"
  • VEOLIA WATER SOLUTIONS - Pilot-scale "Two-phase termophilic codigestion of OFMSW"
  • VENETO AGRICOLTURA SpA - Pilot-scale "Anaerobic digestion, nitrogen bioremoval and phosphorus hyper-accumulation from livestock effluents " 

In June 2013 the group has started a start-up SME (InnovEn Srl -INNOVation for the ENvironment-) which aims at developing and validating the innovative technologies for the environmental protection and renewable energy.

Franco Cecchi

Born in 1949. He is full professor of Chemical Engineering (Hindex = 21, Citations = 1760). His major expertize is the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and biowaste. Over his 35-year long career, he published 108 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (source SCOPUS). He was leader for more several national and international research projects, chair and members of the scientific committee of several international conferences.

David Bolzonella

Born in 1972. He is associate professor of Chemical Engineering (Hindex = 19, Citations = 866). His major expertize concerns the energy recovery from urban biodegradable waste and he published 55 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (source SCOPUS). He is currently chair of 1 specialist group of the International Water Association (Winery Wastes Management) member of the scientific committees of 3 international conferences.

Francesco Fatone

Born in 1978. He is assistant professor of Chemical Engineering (Hindex = 14, Citations = 491). He has published 50 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (source SCOPUS). He is expert of advanced treatment of urban wastewater (in membrane bioreactor (MBR)) and anaerobic supernatant. He is currently co-chair of 1 specialist group of the International Water Association (Small Water and Wastewater Systems -SWWS-), editor of 5 international water-related scientific journals and member of the scientific committees of 2 international conferences. He is chair of the IWA conference ecoSTP2014.

Simos Malamis

Dr Simos Malamis is a Civil and Environmental Engineer and graduate from Imperial College, University of Oxford and the National Technical University of Athens. He is a Marie Curie Research fellow at UNIVR (Hindex=11, Citations>400). He has published 39 papers in international peer reviewed journals. His research activities include: industrial and municipal wastewater treatment by MBR and SBR, advanced biological nutrient removal processes, advanced treatment of sludge reject water.
